FM Qureshi invites Sushma Swaraj to Pakistan for Kartarpur corridor ceremony

ISLAMABAD: In a positive development, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Saturday invited his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu to attend the groundbreaking for the Kartarpur border corridor.

Qureshi in a tweet said: “On behalf of Pakistan I have extended an invitation to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj @SushmaSwaraj ,Capt Amarinder Singh @capt_amarinder & Navjot Singh Sidhu @sherryontopp to attend the groundbreaking ceremony at #Kartarpura on 28 Nov, 2018. #PakistanKartarpuraSpirit.”

Prime Minister Imran Khan will perform the groundbreaking for the facilities at the border crossing on November 28.

Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is cabinet minister in Indian Punjab, has already accepted an invitation extended to him by Prime Minister Imran Khan to attend the ground-breaking ceremony.

Mr Sidhu told an Indian media outlet today that he has happily accepted the invitation sent by PM Khan for the ceremony. He said Imran Khan was his friend and he will visit Pakistan whenever he is invited by him.

“I don’t have words to express my joy,” Mr Sidhu was quoted as saying.

Earlier this week, India endorsed Pakistan’s proposition to open Kartarpur border crossing to facilitate Sikh pilgrims from India to visit the historic Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, situated barely three kilometers from the Gurdaspur border with India.

Pakistan welcomed the Indian move and conveyed its decision to open the Kartarpur corridor.

“It is a step in the right direction and we hope such steps will encourage voice of reason and tranquility on both sides of the border,” Information minister Fawad Chaudhry said in a tweet.
