Karachi anti-encroachment drive: Supreme Court to hear case on March 26

KARACHI: A Supreme Court bench will hear the case pertaining to anti-encroachment drive in Karachi on March 26, ARY News reported on Friday.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmed will hear the case at Karachi Registry of the apex court.

The court has issued notices to Chief Secretary Sindh, Director General Military Land, Director General Karachi Development Authority (KDA) and Commissioner Karachi for the hearing.

The court has also issued notices to Secretary Local Government, Director General Sindh Building Control Authority and other concerned officials.

The Supreme Court directed on Oct 27 last year, to city authorities to remove all encroachments from the city’s amenity plots and pavements with the help of law enforcement agencies and granted them a 15-day deadline for compliance of its orders.

The apex court in a previous hearing of the case in February ruled that the operation to rid Karachi of illegal encroachments would continue.

The top court ordered the Sindh chief secretary to supervise the anti-encroachment operation. “It is our dream that Karachi is restored to its real shape,” said Justice Alam. “It was the Sindh Building Control Authority’s job to revive the city but it failed to do so.”

The court also ordered to lift the debris of demolished encroachments from various parts of the city, including Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim. No interference should be allowed in the operation, the court remarked.

Justice Mushir Alam in the hearing said that the streets of Karachi are still overcrowded with illegal encroachments, leaving no room for pedestrians.
