COLOMBO: A couple from Pakistan was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Sri Lanka after the law enforcers caught them smuggling ‘heroin capsules’ hiding in their stomach.

The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) of the country detected the smuggling attempt during the security screening at the airport.

Police Spokesperson Superintendent of Police, Ruwan Gunasekara, said the PNB officers, when inspected the couple at the arrival lounge, had learned that they had swallowed heroin capsules.

The man and the woman were arrested and admitted to the Negombo Base hospital where necessary actions were taken to recover the heroin capsules.

So far 35 heroin capsules weighing 350 grams have been recovered from the woman. Although the man also has admitted to swallowing the heroin capsules nothing has been recovered yet, according to the report.

The police say the recovered heroin was estimated to be worth Rs. 4.2 million.

It has been revealed that the woman had come to Sri Lanka on six previous occasions but the male visited for the first time.

Recently, a young Bulgarian man was sentenced to 40 months in jail by a Czech court over messages threatening terror attacks in Pakistan unless Islamabad freed a woman arrested with heroin in the country.

According to Czech Radio website, the regional court in Plzen, west of Prague, found 21-year-old Nikolai Simeonov Ivanov guilty of sending the threats by email and text message to a television channel and news website in Pakistan.

The threats demanded the release of a Czech woman he knew, named as Tereza H, who had been arrested in January at Lahore airport.
