KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers Sindh and CTD today apprehended notorious criminal, Zaheer Ahmed alias Gul, the suspended inspector of CTD from Malir, wanted in heinous crimes to the law enforcement agencies (LEAs), Sindh Rangers spokesperson said.
“Arms and ammunition like, Kalashnikov, rifles, pistol and hand grenade were recovered from the arrested outlaw”, while foreign currencies of US, India, Iran and Saudi Arabia were also found in possession of Zaheer Ahmed, contended Rangers spokesman in his statement.
Suspended Inspector of CTD was also involved in supply of arms and ammunition to criminal gangs of Lyari and Sohail Dada Group, Sindh Rangers statement said.
According to the spokesperson, operation for the arrest of his accomplices is underway in the area, whereas the arrested criminal has been handed over to the CTD.
It may be recalled that Zaheer Ahmed was suspended from the CTD over charges of taking ransom for kidnapping.
Sindh government extended policing powers of Rangers in Karachi for 90 days through a notification issued on 11th of this month.
The Sindh government had granted an extension of three months to the paramilitary agency for exercising special police powers in the metropolis, the notification issued by the provincial home department read.
The government of Sindh had extended the special policing powers of Rangers, under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997, with effect from October 8, 2018 until January 5, 2019.
On the request of the Ministry of Interior, the Sindh government accorded extension in the policing powers of the agency in Karachi.
Rangers and police had launched an operation in Karachi on September 5, 2013 following the directives of the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the wake of the rising incidents of terrorism and street crimes in the city, which included targeted killings and extortion.
Under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, Rangers have legal cover to take independent action against criminals and suspected terrorists within Karachi division for 90 days.
