Govt wants citizens to share videos, pictures of vandals

protests

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has stepped up efforts to identify and prosecute miscreants who damaged public and private properties during the recent protests over acquittal of Aasia Bibi in a blasphemy case.

The Ministry of Interior on Sunday set up a complaint cell, urging citizens to share pictures and videos of those involved in damaging state and private properties in the name of protests. They have been asked to share such pictures and videos on 03315480011 to help identify the rioters.

The ministry has assured that name and number of those citizens, who will share pictures and videos of violent protesters, will be kept under wraps.

Meanwhile, Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat announced an official WhatsApp number for people to lodge complaints against vandals who damaged properties during the protests in the capital.

The Deputy Commissioner tweeted: “03359950236 is our official Whatsapp number which will be used to receive complaints & any video, photo, evidence for locating/identifying the culprits who damaged public /private properties and injured people in the area of Islamabad Capital Territory.”

Earlier, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry made it clear that the government would not turn a blind eye to the inciteful speeches made during recent protests against the acquittal of Asia Bibi.

Talking to media in Karachi on Sunday, he said the impression that this government is weak will be removed. He said although the situation was brought under control but the way the Constitution, the people, the political leadership, the military and judiciary were held in contempt, it is unlikely that the government will forgive it.
