KARACHI: During an ongoing anti-encroachment drive, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Sunday razed over 100 illegal shops constructed on sewer lines around Rainbow Centre in Saddar, Karachi.
According to the details, KMC demolished over 100 illegal shops and structures by using heavy machinery around the Rainbow Centre, one of the most congested commercial area of the city.
The operation was to launch on Saturday night but KMC granted 12-hour extension in the deadline after protests, said an official.
During the anti-encroachment operation, the charged mob subjected the bulldozer driver and other KMC officials to torture.
After the clash, heavy contingents of police and Rangers arrived at the scene and disperse the protesters.
Talking to ARY News, Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar reiterate his determination that they will continue the anti-encroachment operation in the city at any cost and will comply with the orders of the apex court.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), on November 17, had submitted a report to commissioner Karachi, apprising about implementation on the directives of the Supreme Court regarding anti-encroachment operation in the city.
The report states details of the KMC’s anti-encroachment drive from November 5 to November 15.
According to the report, as many as 2500 shops were razed at Empress Market and its adjoining Daudpota Road during the anti-encroachment drive.
