PESCO recovers Rs 88, 509 from defaulters in Peshawar

Electricity theft, Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) on Thursday recovered Rs 88, 509 from defaulters during an action in various areas of Peshawar and Banu.

According to the PESCO’s spokesperson, the drive against defaulters and electricity thieves, continued in various areas of Peshawar and Banu of Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa province.

“As many as 51 illegal electricity connections were removed and cases were registered against eight over charges of electricity theft,”  said the spokesperson.

Electricity of 18 distribution transformers was disconnected over non-payment of bills while Rs. 88,509 was recovered from the defaulters by PESCO.

In a separate drive against defaulters and electricity thieves, yesterday, at least 109 people were held in different areas of Peshawar.

The district administration and Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), in a joint crackdown in Liaquatabad, Charsadda Road and others of the city, had arrested at least 109 people over failing to pay their dues and being involved in power theft.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had established a Reporting Centre at the Energy and Power Department for effective supervision and monitoring of the nationwide campaign against power theft in the province.

On October 22, Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed for immediate steps to curtail electricity prices and reduce additional burden on consumers due to pilferage and other damages in the power sector.

PM Imran had directed the power division to present a detailed plan for ensuring the availability of quality transformers.
