Sindh taxation department recuperate Rs700 million from vehicle tax defaulters

KARACHI: A hefty amount of Rs700 million has been recovered by the excise and taxation department in the previous eleven days from vehicle tax defaulters in Sindh.

According to sources, it is informed that Sindh Assembly on Tuesday informed the details related to the Excise and Taxation department that such huge amount recuperation had been made in agreement with individuals who came in large numbers to settle the outstanding tax.

Mukesh Kumar Chawla, Sindh’s Minister for Excise and Taxation expressed his appreciation to the media for the advertisement of the campaign.

Also, Javed Hanif, a Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) lawmaker questioned if people were being charged extra under the name of this campaign.

To this, Mr Chawla stated that all payments via pay orders shall guarantee lucidity and briefed that dodgers or the people who are using their vehicles without paying tax are liable to clear their dues timely.

Mr Chawla also stated that the National Highways and Motorway Police belongs to a federal agency and its vehicles are registered in Islamabad, as its headquarters is situated there as well.

He also added, if any federal department send an application for the registration of its vehicle in Karachi, it will be considered according to the rules and regulations.

Furthermore, Khurram Sher Zaman, an MPA from PTI revolved a query related to the policy of assigning foreign registration number plates of vehicles can be used or not, as some MPAs and Minister are seen using foreign number plates of Qatar and Dubai in the assembly premises.

To his query, Mr Chawla replied that such vehicles with overseas number plates were allowed by the government. He added that the excise & taxation department only register custom paid vehicles & the details related to vehicles having foreign number plates with the federal government.

However, he also stated that the data of vehicles with foreign number plates could be presented to the assembly members upon query.
