Sindh to extend solid waste management operation to other districts

KARACHI: A meeting chaired by provincial Chief Secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah, decided to launch solid waste management operation in all districts of Sindh.

The Managing Director Sindh, Solid Waste Management Board, informed the meeting that a new legislation regarding the solid waster management will be enacted in the province.

Under the proposed law dumping the waste at residential, industrial areas and public places will be declared an illegal act and heavy fine will be imposed on non-compliance of the law.

The chief secretary informed the meeting that a power plant of 50 megawatt capacity will be installed to generate electricity from garbage.

The Sindh government will write a letter to federal government for the project, he added.

The chief secretary directed all deputy commissioners to submit monthly reports about solid waste management in their respective districts.

M.D. Solid Waste Management Board, Commissioner Karachi and deputy commissioners of all districts of Sindh attended the meeting.

The large heaps of garbage in Karachi and other cities and towns of the province have deteriorate the living conditions and made the life of the citizens miserable.

The provincial government facing public outcry and criticism over its seeming disinterest in the chronic garbage problem and lack of proper facilities for disposal of the waste.
