Transit remand of Shehbaz Sharif extended till Nov 10

ISLAMABAD: An accountability on Tuesday extended the transit remand of Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif until November 10.

According to details, upon expiration of his last remand today, president of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) was produced before accountability Judge Muhammad Bashir.

The court then lengthened the remand for four more days till November 10.

Two days earlier, a review petition was filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against its verdict of throwing out a bail plea of Shehbaz Sharif.

The petition reads that the LHC’s decision declaring an appeal against Shehbaz’s arrest “non-maintainable” is “unlawful”. “If an investigation is ongoing against someone, they cannot be arrested,” the petition added.

“Thus, the court should review its decision, approve the plea and grant bail,” the petition further stated.

The Lahore High Court on October 24 had dismissed the petition requesting Shehba’z release from the custody of NAB.

Arrest of Shehbaz Sharif

On October 6, an accountability court granted 10-day physical remand of Shehbaz Sharif in the Rs 14 billion Ashiyana-i-Iqbal housing project scam.

The National Accountability Bureau arrested the PML-N president, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, inside its Lahore office where he was summoned to record his statement in connection with the Punjab Saaf Pani Company case.

A combined investigation team of the country’s anti-graft watchdog quizzed him for an hour over his alleged role in awarding contract to his “favourite firm” in violation of laws in the Ashiyana-i-Iqbal housing project.

The Bureau later issued a statement, declaring that former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif has been arrested in the scam.
