Six more toddlers fall prey to malnutrition in Tharparkar

THARPARKAR: Infants continue to succumb to malnutrition in Sindh’s drought-affected district of Tharparkar, as six more toddlers fall prey at Mithi’s medical facility to this chronic disease, sources privy to the matter said on Monday.

As per details, despite Sindh’s ruling party Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) steps to control increasing fatalities of toddlers in the area, the situation remains unchanged, as six more children died due to malnutrition during last three days at Mithi civil hospital, said well informed sources.

The recent deaths have increased the number to 28 during current month, so far, while number has soared to 607 during ongoing year of 2018.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar,  is scheduled to visit Tharparkar on December 12, Sindh government was directed to finalize arrangements in this regard.

As per details, the top judge expressed on December 7, had expressed serious concerns on the matter while heading the hearing of a suo moto case related to deaths of children in Tharparkar.

The chief justice had categorically remarked that he should not be taken to only prosper places of Thar during his visit on December 12.

The issue of water and food provision to Thar locals is very grave, the provincial government should focus on famine-hit areas of the district, Justice Saqib observed.

A report released by the United Nation’s Children Fund (UNCF) in April stated that Pakistan is among the countries with the highest infant mortality rates, with 22 infants dying before turning one month old.

Earlier, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had also visited Tharparkar over reports of increasing fatalities of infants in the region due to malnutrition and related diseases.

Shah, while talking to media on providing relief to the people of impoverished area had said that the Thar Foundation was providing 20 thousand families fodder for their livestock.
