Attack on media houses: ATC orders prosecution to present witnesses

Farooq Sattar

KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Saturday expressed displeasure over the absence of witnesses during hearing of two cases pertaining to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder’s provocative remarks and attacks on media houses, ARY News reported.

“The prosecution and investigation officer will be penalised if witnesses do not appear in court on the next hearing,” warned the ATC judge, adding that the penalty to be paid by them would be deposited into the dams fund. The hearing of the cases was adjourned till Feb 9.

Former MQM-P convener Farooq Sattar and other accused nominated in the cases appeared in the court.

Last year in Nov, the ATC indicted Sattar, Amir Khan, Qamar Mansoor, Kanwar Naveed Jamil and others in the cases. The court read out charges leveled against them, saying that in 2016, MQM-P leaders had facilitated the party founder who made provocative remarks in his speech outside the Karachi Press Club and instigated workers to attack media houses.

They all pleaded not guilty and decided to contest the charges. In 2016, Artillery Maidan police registered two identical cases against the MQM leaders for praising and facilitating the anti-state speeches delivered by the party founder outside Karachi Press Club, inciting the party workers to attack the media houses.
