LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Friday gave the go-ahead to the constitution of its 40 Standing Committees, ARY News reported.
As per details, members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led coalition government will head as many as 21 committees while those of the opposition will get the chairmanship of 19 committees.
According to data available on the provincial legislature’s website, at present, the assembly has a total of 44 committees, including 36 Standing Committees for government departments, Public Accounts Committee (PAC-I) and PAC-II, Committees for Privileges, Library, Government Assurance, Finance, Business Advisory Committee and House Committee.
Lately, Senior Punjab Minister Abdul Aleem Khan had said the issue of Standing Committees in the provincial assembly would be solved soon. The opposition has a very important role in any democratic system, he added.
“We must accept each other’s importance and give space to work towards solving the public issue.”
In Sindh, the Pakistan People’s Party led provincial government and the opposition have also reached a consensus on the constitution of Sindh Assembly’s standing committees.
PPP agreed to a proposal put forward by the opposition parties’ alliance in the provincial legislature according to which the chairmanship of at least eight committees will be given to members of the opposition benches.
