RAWALPINDI: The Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi Bench on Thursday issued a notice to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on a petition seeking directives for former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to take oath as member of the Punjab Assembly from PP-10.
The bench directed the commission to submit a report on the petition within 15 days.
A citizen moved the petition in the high court, contending that neither the disgruntled Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader was taking oath as MPA from PP-10 nor vacating the seat. He pleaded the court to direct the MPA-elect to take oath.
Earlier, on Jan 8, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Momina Waheed submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly seeking cancellation of assembly membership of Chaudhry Nisar.
The resolution reads that Nisar is tarnishing the image of the legislature by not taking oath. “His stance is tantamount to disservice of people of his constituency.”
Nisar had contested the July 25 general elections on four seats of national and provincial assemblies as an independent candidate but won only one seat PP-10, Rawalpindi-V by securing 53,145. He, however, didn’t take oath as member Punjab Assembly.
Nisar, while speaking to a private TV channel, said that the government should be given time to show its performance. He further suggested Imran Khan of becoming an unconventional prime minister. He further urged the prime minister to think less and do more.
