ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court rejected a report of police about sale of drugs in academic institutions during suo moto hearing on use of drugs in educational institutions, ARY News reported on Friday.
A bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, directed provincial chief secretaries and in-charge officials of the Anti-Narcotics Division to prepare an action plan on the matter within a week.
The bench also ordered launching an awareness campaign on media against drug abuse.
The bench remarked that the police submits a report only to misguide.
The bench observed that the government has failed to take substantial steps for prevention of the use of drugs.
Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan, a member of the bench, urged for a National Action Plan (NAP) to curb drugs like the NAP against terrorism.
The bench adjourned the hearing for one week.
The chief justice in a previous hearing had remarked that several children were using drugs and ordered for launching an awareness campaign against the use of drugs.
“Who is supplying drugs to these children,” the chief justice asked.
The apex court in also directed the centre and provinces to submit monthly progress report against the use of narcotics in educational institutions.
During the proceeding, CJP asked who is responsible to curb the drug peddling and maintained that drugs are easily available in the educational institutions.
The state minister for interior Shaharyar Afridi had claimed recently in Islamabad that a survey had indicated that 75pc of female students and 45pc male students of the capital’s elite schools use drugs such as crystal meth.
