SC seeks report from IWC in petition against River Indus water theft

River Indus water theft

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Saturday issued a notice to Indus Water Commission (IWC) on a petition against water theft from River Indus, ARY News reported.

A two-member apex court bench comprising Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the petition today.

The petitioner contended in his plea that India was stealing water from River Indus, hence route of Marala Link Canal should be changed.

After hearing the arguments, the CJP issued notice to the IWT commission and sought report in 10 days.

On December 30, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, heard the petition alleging that water is being stolen from the River Ravi and Abasia Link Canal by India. He ordered the Punjab Irrigation Department Secretary Syed Ali Murtaza on Sunday to submit a report on the matter by January 4.

“Why is India stealing our water?” the Justice Nisar asked and added, “We will not let India steal Pakistan’s water.”

He added that the court would “not allow water to be stolen from poor farmers from the Abasia Link Canal.”

The chief justice asked if the Punjab government was aware of whether India was stealing water from the Ravi river, and if so, what steps had been taken to remedy the situation.

During the hearing, he said cases should be registered against those who steal water in Pakistan.
