Govt submits JIT reports of high-profile cases in Court

Sindh High Court, KMC, K-Electric

KARACHI: The Government of Sindh submitted joint investigation teams’ (JITs) reports in Sindh High Court (SHC) on Saturday, ARY News reported.

The provincial government submitted JIT reports in high-profile cases of Lyari-based gangster Uzair Baloch, former Fishermen Cooperative Society chairman Dr Nisar Morai and the Baldia Town garments factory arson case in the court.

A division bench of the high court headed by Justice Mohammad Iqbal Kalhoro hearing a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Syed Ali Haider Zaidi seeking the court to order government to make public announcement of the JIT reports on Uzair Baloch, Nisar Morai and Baldia Town factory arson case.

The bench remarked that the court will decide the matter after review of the JIT reports.

The government counsel denied of formation of a joint investigation team with regard to case against former Fishermen Cooperative Society chairman Nisar Morai.

The counsel of petitioner argued that the government of Sindh had issued notification of formation of the JIT in Nisar Morai’s case. He also pleaded for verification of the submitted JIT reports from concerned departments.

The bench directed the petitioner to submit a copy of the notification and affidavit by March 09.

In an earlier hearing of the case, Advocate General of Sindh Salman Talibuddin stated before the court that there was no law that bound the government to disclose such reports. He stated that JIT reports were not considered as evidence. These reports were just findings of investigation teams.

Invoking the constitution’s Article 19-A (Right to information), PTI leader Ali Zaidi in his petition had asserted that the provincial and federal governments’ failure to publish the JIT reports was a violation of the citizens’ fundamental rights.

He said the content of the JIT reports was of public importance because it related to crimes that had wide-reaching implications on people at large. To strengthen his case, he said the print and electronic media, through various sources, had reported on the JITs obtaining evidence that suggested involvement of various politicians in criminal activities.
