Commander Rawalpindi corps visits troops at Siachen: ISPR

RAWALPINDI: Commander Rawalpindi Corps Lieutenant General Bilal Akbar on Thursday paid a visit to Pakistani troops at Siachen, the Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The commander appreciated the troops for their vigilance, alertness and high morale, the ISPR statement added.

Lieutenant General Bilal Akbar was appointed as Commander 10 Corps Rawalpindi in a major reshuffle in army ranks in late August.

Nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan fought over Siachen in 1987, but guns on the glacier have largely fallen silent since a peace process began in 2004.

An estimated 8,000 troops from both sides have died on the glacier since 1984, almost all of them from avalanches, landslides, frostbite, altitude sickness or heart failure rather than combat.
