Sindh Assembly select committee meets to discuss new Police Order bill

KARACHI: A meeting of Sindh Assembly’s select committee held on Monday to deliberate over the draft of proposed police law, ARY News reported.

The meeting of the committee being attended by the government and the opposition members.

The select committee will discuss the police order and submit its recommendations to the assembly on the proposed piece of legislation.

Khawaja Izharul Hassan of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), talking to media after the meeting said that the government has brought the Police Order 2002 in the shape of new bill adding that the government wants to replace the Sindh Police Act 1861 with the new bill.

He also suggested a system of local policing to ensure law and order in the new legislation.

MQM lawmaker said that the next session of the select committee has been summoned on Wednesday.

The government on Friday placed the legislation in the Sindh Assembly to replace the colonial Police Act 1861 with Police Order 2002, which remained enforced during Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s government in the province.

The law will give a control to the chief minister over the postings and transfers of the police top officials.

Provincial Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mukesh Kumar Chawla tabled “The Sindh (Repeal of Police Act, 1861 and Revival of Police Order, 2002) Bill, 2019” to bifurcate the law enforcing department into investigation and operation.

The bill referred to the assembly’s select committee, consists of legislators from treasury and opposition benches. It is expected that the committee will return the bill to assembly with a few amendments.
