SWAT: A woman was shot dead in Swat by unidentified men in the name of ‘honour’, ARY News reported.
According to details, the woman was travelling in a rickshaw when unknown assailants riding a motorbike arrived and sprayed the woman with bullets.
She died on the spot. Terror gripped the locality after the attack and law enforcement personnel cordoned off the area to collect evidence of the murder.
Police could only confirm that it was the case of ‘honour killing’, adding they were further investigating it.
The country adopted legislation against “honor killings” in 2016, introducing tough punishment and closing a legal loophole that had allowed killers to walk free if pardoned by family members.
The law against the “honour killing” was approved during the joint sitting of the Parliament on October 6, 2016. Under the bill titled ‘The Anti-Honour Killing Laws (Criminal Amendment Bill) 2015’ stated that killing relatives of the victim would only be able to pardon the killer if he is sentenced to capital punishment. However, the culprit would still face a mandatory life sentence of twelve-and-a-half years.
The Anti-Honour Killing Laws (Criminal Amendment Bill) 2015 and the Anti-Rape Laws (Criminal Amendment Bill) 2015 were originally presented by PPP legislator Sughra Imam and passed by the Senate in March 2015. However, since they were not taken up by the National Assembly in time, the bills lapsed. And they were later passed in 2016.
